NAIROBI, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's oldest university on Monday hosted an exhibition by visiting Chinese artists to help showcase the East African nation's rich culture and natural wonders.

The day-long exhibition at the University of Nairobi's School of Arts and Design was attended by senior Kenyan officials, representatives of Chinese Embassy in Kenya, students and art lovers.

Kiprop Lagat, the Director of Culture in the Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts, said the exhibition was held against a backdrop of efforts to promote cultural diplomacy between Kenya and China.

"This exhibition fits with our bilateral agreement with China to promote cultural exchanges in diverse spheres like performing and visual arts, music, library, archives and museums," said Lagat.

He noted that exchange visits involving artists from China and Kenya are part of cultural diplomacy between the two countries.

Lagat said the exhibition by Chinese artists broke a new ground in the quest for harmonious co-existence among people of different cultural background.

"We hope to see Kenyan artists exhibiting in China and look forward to robust exchanges between Chinese and Kenyan artists in the coming years," said Lagat.

The exhibition by Chinese artists was a culmination of their extensive tour to Kenya that commenced on March 24 and included a visit to an elephant orphanage, wildlife sanctuary and participation in charity events.

Likewise, the visiting visual artists and university scholars attended the March 29 launch of Afro Sino Cultural Exchange Association that seeks to promote cultural ties between Beijing and its African partners.

Chinese Embassy in Kenya said cultural exchanges are embedded within the Belt and Road Initiative to achieve mutual benefits.
