BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Top seed Jannik Sinner of Italy reached the China Open semifinals with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Hungary's Fabian Marozsan on Monday, while women's No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek advanced after her opponent retired.
The 24-year-old world No. 2, a four-time Grand Slam champion, dominated the opening set but was tested in the second. Despite creating four break chances, Sinner failed to convert as Marozsan held firm.
At 4-4, the Hungarian broke serve for a 5-4 lead after Sinner saved one point with an ace. But the Italian responded immediately with a love game to level.
Sinner then broke again in another love game to close out the match 7-5.
Next, Sinner will face third seed Alex de Minaur, who advanced after Jakub Mensik retired while trailing 4-1. The Australian is also aiming to qualify for the ATP Finals.
On the women's side, Swiatek maintained her perfect record in Beijing, winning the first set 6-0 against Colombia's Camila Osorio before the world No. 83 retired early in the second. The six-time Grand Slam champion first played the China Open in 2023, when she dropped only one set on her way to the title. ■
