BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi will attend a ministerial meeting on the Iran nuclear issue Friday in Vienna, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Wednesday.

According to spokesperson Lu Kang, the European Union's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, and the foreign ministers of France, Germany, Russia, Britain, Iran and China will hold the meeting.

It will be the first foreign ministers' meeting by parties remaining within the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) after the U.S. withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal.

Lu said China believes the JCPOA, one of the important achievements of multilateralism, has played a key role in maintaining the non-proliferation regime as well as peace and stability in the Middle East.

He said Wang's participation in the meeting shows China's clear stance on maintaining the deal.

"We hope the foreign ministers meeting will send a solidary and clear signal and consolidate confidence and support from the international community," Lu said at a news briefing. "China is willing to keep close communication with all relevant members to ensure the success of the meeting."

Lu also announced that, at the invitation of Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl, Wang will pay a visit to Austria on Thursday.
