BRATISLAVA, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Slovak city of Banska Bystrica and German city of Augsburg will cooperate in a joint international project marking the mining tradition of the two cities. Banska Bystrica spokesperson Zdenka Marhefkova informed on Tuesday.

The European Fuggerian Road project, which should include various mining towns and cities in Europe, is set to be launched in early 2019.

"Banska Bystrica supports its medieval industrial traditions from the Fuggerian period. We are glad that our working trip to Augsburg has launched the process within which we have been invited to cooperate on this unique cross-border project. It's an application that will map and promote the mining and copper history of all partner cities and offer further activities," stressed Marhefkova.

The project is named after Jakob Fugger (1459-1525), a major German merchant, mining entrepreneur and banker who was among the richest people in the world at the end of the Middle Ages partly thanks to his silver and copper mines, some of which were located in the Central Slovakia, in Banska Bystrica, Kremnica and Banska Stiavnica.
