SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- A gunfight between militants and Indian troops broke out Wednesday in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight erupted at village Muniward in Anantnag district, about 51 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"A gunfight started this morning between militants and government forces in Muniward village here," a senior police official posted in Anantnag told Xinhua.

"Two to three militants are believed to be trapped in the area."

Authorities have imposed restrictions in Anantnag town as a precautionary measure and suspended internet services in the district.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. However, of late Indian policemen have been trained to fight them.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
